4100 Free Wi-Fi locations and maybe a big name to come Thanks to a steady flow of e-mails with new Free Wi-Fi locations to be added, the Wi-Fi-FreeSpot Directory has passed the 4100 mark for individual listings in the USA. Add in the Airports listed on the Airports with Free Wi-Fi page, the growing number of Hotel chains, with many locations, listed on the Hotels with Free Wi-Fi page, the RV Resorts and campgrounds listed on their Free Wi-Fi page, plus Panera Bread and Apple retail stores, etc. with multiple locations, and, oh yeah, Europe and the rest of the World and the full count is probably close to 7500, maybe more. There's probably a Free Wi-Fi location near you. A post by Glenn Fleischman in today's Wi-Fi Networking News refernces a Mobile Pipeline story that some shop managers are pressing upper management to make Wi-Fi free at Starbucks. That could be another 5000 or so locations if it becomes their policy, although, getting T-Mobile to go along with it will be tough. In addition, there are many individuals and community group members who are willingly sharing their home networks with their neighbors and passersby. The Wi-Fi-FreeSpot Directory doesn't list these types of Free Wi-Fi locations but you can find many of them listed at http://www.nodedb.com Another recent interesting story concerns some Airports that charge for Wi-Fi trying to prohibit any retail type vendor in their airports from offering Free Wi-Fi by saying they have exclusive ownership of the airwave space. Up til now the Airport user has been a captive audience that hasn't had any access to Free Wi-Fi. Maybe that will change. Wednesday, November 03, 2004
