Desperately seeking Wi-Fi revenues Esme Vos of MuniWireless.com has an excellent article on two recent announcements from Wireless WorkZone Alliance (WWZA) and Roampoint and their attempts at trying to squeeze money out of Wi-Fi. Her take on this can be summed up in her quote - "Cities such as New York, Austin and San Francisco have so many free hotspots - set up by individual hotspot owners and community groups such as NYCWireless and Austin Wireless City Project - you'd be crazy to park yourself in a paid-for location, even though it may have the reassuringly bland corporate logo of WWZA or Roampoint." If you've been following the growth of the listings in the Wi-Fi-FreeSpot Directory you'll know that it's not just cities that have free locations. Lots of small towns have it too.
