Ride the 3rd Wave Boston's Tech Superpowers has used Newburyopen.net to spread free Wi-Fi up and down Newbury Street and to spread the word about their own business. Now, Atlanta's 3rd Wave is doing something similar. They will install and maintain the equipment and provide support for retail establishments who want to be a Wi-Fi hotspot. The establishment must provide the broadband access and agree to provide the Wi-Fi access to their customers for free. For both, a major benefit has been the publicity, i.e. free advertising, they've received. Read more about 3rd Wave Hotspots. Free Wi-Fi hits the Mainstream Courtyard by Marriott Hotels offer free Wi-Fi in their guestrooms. The other night I saw an ad for Courtyard on TV solely dedicated to selling free Wi-Fi as an amenity. This in itself was a significant step in the emergence of Wi-Fi into the Mainstream conciousness, but the way it was presented was also significant. The ad portrays a business traveler rushing back to his room at Courtyard because it's "bath time" - the time that his baby daughter is about to take her bath at home. Daddy fires up his laptop on his free Wi-Fi connection and sees, via a web cam, his baby daughter and his wife at "bath time" and they're looking at Daddy from their end too. This portrayal of the "joy of experience" does a lot more to bring Wi-Fi into the Mainstream than any of the Centrino ads that Intel ever ran. Thursday, February 05, 2004
