Wi-Fi for RVers
Tom Gonser is out there cruising the highways and byways in his RV and he's looking for Internet access. Most RVers need e-mail access but in addition, they now "they want to use the full spectrum of Internet offerings, from making reservations to paying their bills and managing their investments -- all online".
He maintains a web site called RVers Online and he just published an article that traces the growth of internet access at RV Parks. In order to meet the demands of their customers RV Parks first became "modem friendly" and now many are offering wireless access (Wi-Fi). The article also discusses access fees at RV Parks and how this might influence an RVer's choice of RV Park. The FreeSpot Directory has several listings for free access at RV Parks that Tom has found in his travels.

Free Wi-Fi brought to you by.........
Wired Magazine announced they are providing free Wi-Fi to Union Square Park in New York City. A brilliant move. Corporate sponsorship of Free Wi-Fi in targeted areas. Yes, it's advertising but they get the added benefit of being associated with providing a popular free service. I can see this spreading to other areas and anything that spreads free Wi-Fi access is a good thing to me. Wednesday, August 13, 2003

To be Free or not to be Free - that is the question
There is an interesting discussion going on amongst three well known Wi-Fi bloggers, Glenn Fleischman of Wi-Fi Networking News, Mike Masnick of Techdirt Wireless and Alan Reiter of Reiter's Wireless Data Web Log, about Free access versus Fee access.
Mike started the discussion with this post.
Glenn's take on it all is here, and you'll find Alan's here, and then you can see Mike's follow-up here.
Good reading for any location owner still on the fence about free or fee. The big companies who say they're planning to install thousands of new hotspots in the next year get all the headlines in the mainstream press but based on my adding 10 or more new free locations to The FreeSpot Directory every week I'd say that free location owners deserve some recognition too.
